I have come across people believing and saying that Sexually Transmitted Diseases, more widely known as “VD” in those days, spread mainly through physical contacts with opposite sex. And believes that it can be cured with having sex with a virgin. Unfortunately it is not so. Then what it is? How it spreads?. Hence there is an urgent need to explain scientifically specially to adolescents and vulnerables for effective prevention and management of the disease. The infected person carries the virus (also fungus, bacteria etc. – depends on the nature of the infection) of the diseases. Yes, there are around 23 types of infections named separately under the category of Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
The scientific facts on STD are follows:An infected person either male or female transmits the infection knowingly or unknowingly to other (his/her) partner through unprotected sexual contact. · Luckily most of the infections can be cured · Syndromic approach is followed · But in the case of females, they are mostly asymptomatic. · Do not cause serious problems when detected and treated early. · Simultaneous partner notification is very important in the treatment · Symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) are akin to STD. · Problems are many · Young people are vulnerable for infection · Definite correlation between STI and HIV · Prevention is better than cure
