There is no dearth of ‘myths’ and ‘misconceptions’ when it comes to the subject of sexuality. I suppose majority and a large number of myths and misconceptions exist around human sexuality. A few participants who genuinely participated in my talk to a group raised a query to distinguish myth from misconception. Many are of the opinion that both denote the same. Basically I have to clarify the terms with scientific clues. Broadly speaking ‘myth’ is commonly held belief that is untrue or without foundation, whereas ‘misconception’ is an erroneous idea. A belief prevailing in the community without any basic support to the contention is myth. Probably it may be continued generations together in a society. Normally one cannot ask proof for that. So also the misconception is wrong idea. For years together the misconception on a particular matter / issue may be prolonging. Generally nobody attempts to verify the correctness of the matter. Moreover both myths and misconceptions are very common among villagers. But one cannot deny the same situation is prevailing in cities also with some subdued nature. The strength of the issue depends on how much weightage is given to that. Hope I made it clear in simple terms.
Coming to the sexuality myths and misconceptions, as I said earlier, the quantum mounts heavily. Myths about night emission, masturbation, size of penis, size of breast, hymen, virginity etc. are the most common and widely prevailing among young people. Myths and misconceptions cause pressures and anxiety in the minds of many especially among the habitual, victims and ignorant people. Appropriate scientific facts should reach the minds of the young at early stage. You may agree that sexuality education only provide necessary support and create confidence among young.
