'Vettangudi' is the important nesting point

'Vettangudi' is the important nesting point

In my previous post I briefed the gestures of Kollukudipatti villagers shown towards the birds that are taking shelter in Vettangudi bird sanctuary. I hope you would have relished the information by reading the post.

Vettangudi
'Vettangudi' is the oldest bird sanctuary in southern Tamil Nadu spread over to roughly 38 hectares of land. It is situated in the village kollukudipatti on the Madurai-Karaikudi highway. It has captured a prominent place in the tourism map. As such it attracts visitors not only from all over India but also many foreigners to this unique sanctuary.

The forest department officals say that roughly 20 migrant varieties of birds flock to this sanctury every year. The varieties include common storks, ibis, grebes, egrets, herons and cormorants to comparatively rarer ones such as the yellow wattle lapwing and lesser whistling duck. As per the census taken five years ago there were almost 25000 birds .

The season
The main reason for the sanctuary to attract so many birds is the unparalleled gesture of the kollukudipatti villagers. As a speciality, the villagers take the responsibility of the task of receiving the visitors and guide them explaining the salient features of the sanctuary.

Three big rain-fed tanks situated centrally fulfills the water needs of the birds. As it is the safe haven for the birds Vettangudi is the important nesting point for the birds. The pocket attracts wide varieties of waders and water birds from September to February. As such the main season is from September to February.

Forest Department Plan
The forest department hailed the villagers conservation work and the contribution to the sanctuary. They have the plan to train the villagers as eco-guides for effective local participation and for income generation.
